Every year, the architectural world waits in anticipation for the announcement of Malaysia’s Building of the Year. In 2025, the honor was awarded to Media City Angkasapuri, a project that stands as a bold testament to the nation’s evolving identity and creative spirit.
A Legacy Reimagined
Emerging from Malaysia’s journey as an independent nation, Angkasapuri has always been more than just a building—it’s a symbol of truth, freedom, and unity. The original complex, built in the 1960s, helped shape the country’s modernist architectural legacy. Now, the Media City Masterplan takes this legacy forward, integrating old and new through multi-level plazas and daring forms that speak to both history and progress.
Where Tradition Meets Technology
The new campus, designed by GDP Architects Sdn Bhd for Media City Development Sdn Bhd, is a visual symphony. Its forms are inspired by Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, with local artistry woven into every detail. The auditorium, hovering over the plaza, blends cultural inspiration with state-of-the-art technology, creating a space that’s as engaging as it is beautiful. Asymmetrical cladding fins, inspired by the graceful hand movements of traditional dancers, fill the interiors with natural light and a sense of movement.
The Red Hibiscus – A Floral Tribute
One of the campus’s most striking features is the Music Studio, affectionately called “The Red Hibiscus.” Its sculptural facade emulates the national flower, playing with light, shadow, and elevation. Songket motifs and floating metal screens bring a tactile richness to the design, celebrating Malaysia’s cultural passion and innovation.
Sustainable and Iconic
The administrative office tower is oriented for optimal energy efficiency, with Low-E glass and passive design strategies minimizing consumption. The facade’s three-dimensional triangular ornamentations have become an iconic feature, making Angkasapuri instantly recognizable on the city skyline.
A Place Where Stories Belong
From the steel sails that rise above the city to the bold arcs and flame-like forms, Media City Angkasapuri is more than a building—it’s a song, a dance, and a story. It’s where Malaysia’s name finds its voice in architecture, and where every shadow and curve tells a tale of unity, creativity, and hope.
